One of the best locations in the old city. There is no Corfiot who hasn’t stop even once in his lifetime to admire this beautiful arcaded street. Liston was built during French occupation and finished in the years of the British period. There is a myth that M Lesseps,French diplomat, build the area. According to several historical evidences it was the Captain Ioannis Parmezan (Corfiot) who was responsible for the overall construction.
Liston is a Venetian word used in various cities of the Veneto region and former possessions of the ancient Republic of Venice to indicate a part of the city, usually a square or section of a square. The term liston refers to the long marble slabs used for paving the streets. The term far el liston, means ‘to walk around the square’.
You will find that Rue de Rivoli and Rue de Castiglione in Paris have exactly the same architecture!
A famous place among the high class of the 16th century used for their everyday walks. The book of ‘Libro d’oro’ (the golden book) was a catalogue of the people who allowed to walk in this street and it was a privilege of the aristocrats. But believe us that is also a myth which has pass from mouth to mouth and has no scientific ground.
Today the ground floor is occupied by Cafes, very busy on evenings and weekends.
