House of Kapodistrias (first governor of Greece) was built in 1840 based on plans by the famous architect Ioannis Xronis, in place of the former mansion of Kapodistrias family.
During the era of the Ionian State this building was the residence of the President of the Ionian Senate and after the Union with Greece it housed the Prefecture of Corfu.
During World War II it housed the Italian Military Command and after the liberation it was used again as Prefecture.
In 1977 the house donated to the Ministry of Education and is currently the main building of the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation of the Ionian University
Since 1985 houses the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting (Ionian University).
It is worth noting that in the old note of 500 drachmas both Ioannis Kapodistrias and Kapodistrias Mansion depicted on one side.
